Nolvadex (tamoxifen) is an anti-estrogen treatment usually prescribed to combat or prevent certain types of estrogen receptor positive (ER+) cancer, usually breast cancer. It is commonly used as a breast cancer treatment in both women and men, and in both pre- and post-menopausal women.

Nolvadex is often prescribed in several circumstances:

• To prevent cancer from occuring in patients at high risk, such as a family history of breast cancer;

Taking Nolvadex

Nolvadex tablets are usually administered in 10 or 20 mg, though dosage strength may exceed 20 mg. Ideally each dose should be taken at the same time each day to keep levels of the medication consistent within the body.

The medication is typically taken long term, often for more than 5 years. During this time dosage strength may be adjusted numerous times according to the body's response. It is also quite common for other medications to be prescribed to enhance Nolvadex's effects, or to ease side effects.

Some patients simply do not respond well to Nolvadex; alternative medications with similar estrogen-blocking properties may be tried if Nolvadex is not producing the desired results.

Adverse Effects

Side effects of this medication can vary to some extent depending on the condition being treated, though some are more or less universal. All side effects are rare, and most are mild:

• Hot flashes
• Stomach upset
• Headache
• Loss of interest in sex
• Hair thinning
  

More serious side effects which should be brought to the attention of a doctor include:

• Pain in eyes
• Blurred vision
• Easy bleeding or bruising
• Extreme fatigue
• Severe stomach pain
• Symptoms of infection
• Yellowing of eyes or skin

This treatment may cause hormonal birth control methods to be ineffective; alternative methods of birth control should be utilized for the duration of treatment.

Many other medications, including non-prescription medications and nutritional supplements, are unlikely to cause serious reactions when mixed with Nolvadex, but may render treatment less effective. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before mixing treatments.

Nolvadex can be disruptive to still-developing bodies and should never be given to children who haven't achieved sexual maturity. The medication is easily absorbed by the skin and lungs, so children and women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid handling tablets or inhaling even trace amounts of tablet dust.
